MANILA, April 9, 2026 (KPT) – ASEAN member states have convened to explore ways of providing further assistance to Timor-Leste following its formal accession to the regional bloc in 2025, officials said Thursday.

The discussions took place during the 19th ASEAN Coordinating Council Working Group (ACCWG) meeting on Timor-Leste’s membership, held in Manila. Cambodia was represented by Kung Phoak, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

According to Cambodia’s foreign ministry, the meeting reviewed the latest progress in implementing the roadmap for Timor-Leste’s full integration into ASEAN.

Delegates examined past efforts and considered additional measures to support the country’s transition as the bloc’s newest member.

Talks also focused on priority recommendations and next steps to ensure Timor-Leste’s smooth participation in ASEAN structures and activities.

Timor-Leste officially became ASEAN’s 11th member in 2025 after decades of diplomatic engagement. Its accession was hailed as a milestone for both the young nation and the association, reflecting ASEAN’s commitment to inclusivity and regional cooperation.

Since gaining independence from Indonesia in 2002, Timor-Leste has sought to strengthen its diplomatic, economic, and security ties within Southeast Asia.

Membership is seen as a platform to expand trade, attract investment, and contribute to regional policymaking, while also engaging in initiatives on sustainable development, disaster management, and human resource development.
