BRUNEI DARUSSALAM, June 24, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has called for stronger regional action against fake news and online disinformation as ASEAN information ministers reviewed long‑term media and communication strategies at a meeting in Brunei.

A delegation from the Ministry of Information, led by Under Secretary of State Prak Thav Amida, attended the 23rd ASEAN Senior Officials Responsible for Information Meeting (SOMRI) from June 24 to 25.

Prak, serving as vice‑chair, congratulated Brunei on its role as ASEAN information sector chair and praised its efforts to advance regional cooperation in media and communications.

The meeting reviewed progress on initiatives ranging from digital broadcasting and media content to information sharing and training.

Officials also discussed the ASEAN Information and Media Strategic Plan 2016–2025, the new Work Plan 2026–2035, and preparations for the ASEAN Communication Master Plan Phase III covering 2026–2030.

Cooperation with dialogue partners including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia, New Zealand and Norway was also assessed.

Cambodia voiced support for strengthening media literacy, promoting responsible use of social media and combating manipulated digital content.

The delegation introduced a proposed initiative titled the “ASEAN‑China Forum for Responsible Media and Information Integrity in the Digital Age,” aimed at enhancing cooperation on media governance and public trust.

Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to work with ASEAN member states and partners to improve access to accurate information and strengthen resilience against disinformation, describing the challenge as a growing threat to regional stability and confidence.
