PHNOM PENH, April 17, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has lodged a strong protest over what it calls the illegal occupation of several cultural heritage sites by Thai armed forces.

In a statement dated April 13, the ministry said the sites – including Tamone Thom, Ta Krabey Temple and K’nar Temple – lie within Cambodian sovereign territory.

It voiced “grave concern” over the continued presence of Thai authorities and reported construction of roads and statues, describing the activities as a “fait accompli” and a violation of sovereignty.

The ministry criticised public visits and events organised at the sites, calling them an unlawful exercise of jurisdiction.

It said the actions breach international agreements, citing the 1907 Franco‑Siamese Treaty, subsequent boundary demarcations, a 2000 memorandum of understanding, the 2003 border management terms of reference, the UN Charter and the 1954 Hague Convention.

Cambodia urged Thailand to halt activities, withdraw personnel and respect territorial sovereignty, while stressing its commitment to peaceful resolution through bilateral mechanisms, including the Joint Boundary Commission.
