GENEVA, April 20, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation during talks held on the sidelines of United Nations meetings in Geneva, officials said Monday.

The meeting on April 17 brought together Keo Sovann, Cambodia’s Permanent Representative, and Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s envoy to the UN Office in Geneva.

Both sides pledged to strengthen bilateral ties and maintain coordination in multilateral forums, including the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization.

Sovann expressed appreciation for assistance provided by the former Soviet Union after the fall of Democratic Kampuchea, as well as Russia’s ongoing support through scholarships and training programmes.

Officials said the talks underscored the countries’ continued engagement within international institutions on issues of mutual interest.

In recent years, cooperation has centred on diplomatic coordination, education opportunities for Cambodian students and limited economic and technical exchanges.

Analysts describe the relationship as friendly but not highly strategic compared with Cambodia’s ties with China or ASEAN partners.
