PHNOM PENH, April 30, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia marked the 27th anniversary of its accession to ASEAN on Thursday, highlighting the bloc’s role in promoting peace, cooperation and stability amid shifting geopolitical and economic conditions.

Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn said ASEAN’s founding principles — respect for sovereignty, non interference and peaceful settlement of disputes — remain “more important than ever” in today’s uncertain global environment.

Cambodia joined ASEAN on April 30, 1999, and Sokhonn noted the bloc has provided a vital platform for national development and international engagement over nearly three decades.

He pointed to gains in trade, investment and connectivity, as well as efforts to strengthen supply chain resilience and narrow development gaps.

Cooperation in science, technology and innovation has also helped improve livelihoods and prepare Cambodia for future challenges.

Sokhonn stressed Cambodia’s active role within ASEAN, including chairing the bloc three times, guiding discussions on political, security, economic and socio cultural issues.

He said Cambodia’s engagement has reinforced ASEAN’s unity and central role in regional architecture, particularly in responding to emerging global challenges.

Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, with emphasis on unity, inclusiveness and people centred developmen
