Cambodia Monitors Thai Border Fence Construction Near Battambang Amid Sovereignty Concerns
by: Vann Sokunthea

PHNOM PENH, May 11, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is closely monitoring reports of Thai military construction of a border fence near Battambang province, amid concerns over possible encroachment on its territory, a senior government official said Monday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Kampuchea Thmey that border authorities are “carefully inspecting” the situation to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity. He outlined three points regarding the development along the frontier.
First, he noted that the stretch between boundary markers 52 and 59 in Kamrieng district had been agreed by both countries in 2008 as a straight‑line border. Joint technical teams carried out surveys in November 2025, installing temporary markers every 50 metres to clarify the line.
Second, Cambodian authorities are monitoring construction between markers 52 and 54 to ensure the fence does not cross into Cambodian territory.
Third, he recalled Prime Minister Hun Manet’s remarks at a trilateral meeting in Cebu on May 7, urging full implementation of a joint statement signed in December 2025. The accord calls for the immediate resumption of border surveying work by both sides.
Thai media, including Khaosod English, reported that the fence spans about 1,310 metres and is expected to be completed within 45 days. The project, led by the Thai military, is described as part of efforts to strengthen border security and improve safety for local residents.
Reports said the area is flat terrain with an established border line and patrol roads on both sides.
