Cambodia tops global ranking for natural environment in 2026 U.S. News report

PHNOM PENH, May 18, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has been ranked first worldwide in the Natural Environment category of the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings, marking a major recognition of the country’s ecological assets.

The report highlighted Cambodia’s leading position as a significant achievement, noting that nations with lower levels of industrial activity and urbanisation often perform strongly in environmental preservation.

It underscored that economic output does not always correlate with environmental quality.

Seychelles placed second globally, followed by Slovenia in third. Within Southeast Asia, Myanmar ranked second and Laos third, both behind Cambodia.

The ranking draws attention to Cambodia’s rich biodiversity and natural resources, which continue to bolster its tourism sector. In recent years, the government has promoted protected areas, national parks, and conservation initiatives as part of its development and tourism strategy.

Cambodia is home to internationally recognised ecosystems, including the Tonle Sap Lake and vast forested regions that sustain diverse wildlife.

Authorities have increasingly emphasised sustainable tourism and conservation efforts to balance economic growth with environmental protection, particularly amid expanding infrastructure and urbanisation.
