PM Hun Manet removes two Mondulkiri security chiefs amid fraud concerns

MONDULKIRI, May 23, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has dismissed two senior security officials in Mondulkiri province, in a move linked to failures in tackling technology-based fraud.
Lieutenant General Lao Sokha, the provincial police commissioner, and Major General Hem Bonarel, commander of the Royal Gendarmerie in Mondulkiri, were removed under separate sub-decrees issued on May 22.
The dismissals were reportedly connected to concerns over technology-related fraud offences and shortcomings in suppressing such activities in the province.
They come as authorities intensify efforts to combat online scams and cyber-enabled fraud, which have drawn growing regional and international attention.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has repeatedly warned that officials found complicit in, or negligent against, online scam operations would face action.
In recent public statements, he pledged strict enforcement of the law against cyber fraud networks, including disciplinary measures against law enforcement officers who fail to act.
