Cambodia Urges Safeguarding of Traditional Wedding Customs

PHNOM PENH, June 2, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s government has appealed to the public to preserve authentic Khmer wedding traditions, warning that modern practices risk distorting ceremonies and undermining cultural values.

In a joint statement, the Ministries of Culture and Fine Arts and Cults and Religion stressed that Khmer weddings are rooted in moral teachings, cultural identity and respect for women, with clear distinctions between engagement and marriage rituals.

The Ministries noted that some recent ceremonies have improperly included the knot‑tying and wrist‑binding ritual, traditionally reserved for weddings, during engagement events.

The Ministries also urged families to avoid using government uniforms, rank insignia and administrative symbols at weddings, saying such attire is strictly for official duties. They cautioned that inappropriate modifications could weaken the integrity of traditions passed down through generations.

The ministries called on wedding organizers, artists, musicians and service providers to follow proper practices and ensure correct ceremonial attire. They emphasized that preserving the structure of Khmer weddings is essential to maintaining cultural identity.

The Ministries encouraged younger generations to study and respect Khmer customs, saying the preservation of traditional ceremonies is vital to safeguarding Cambodia’s heritage and national identity for the future. The appeal reflects growing concern that modern trends and commercial influences could erode the authenticity of one of Cambodia’s most important cultural traditions.
