Majesty King says military service law and UNCLOS ratification strengthen sovereignty and defence in National Assembly address

PHNOM PENH, July 1, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni has hailed the adoption of a military service law and the ratification of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as major steps to reinforce national defence, safeguard sovereignty and promote responsible use of maritime resources.
In a royal address opening the sixth session of the National Assembly, the King said the measures would also foster patriotism among younger generations and reflected the legislature’s effective fulfilment of its constitutional duties.
He praised lawmakers for engaging with citizens nationwide, saying their visits had strengthened unity and helped address public concerns.
The King commended efforts to support armed forces personnel and veterans in border provinces, stressing Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border issues peacefully in line with international law.
The address underscored Cambodia’s rejection of conflict and respect for international legal frameworks. The King expressed support for Prime Minister Hun Manet’s government, citing its record in maintaining political stability, public order and macroeconomic resilience.
He said these conditions had supported growth, investment, job creation and improved livelihoods through industrial diversification and stronger domestic production.
Calling for continued unity, the King urged Cambodians at home and abroad to support efforts to safeguard sovereignty, resolve disputes peacefully and advance national development through reform and modernization.
He also encouraged youth participation in implementing the military service law, saying it would contribute to defence and long‑term resilience.
