PHNOM PENH, July 15, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has underscored the importance of its relationship with France as the two countries prepare for a landmark year of diplomatic engagements, including a state visit by President Emmanuel Macron and the hosting of the Francophonie Summit in Phnom Penh.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn made the remarks Tuesday evening while attending a reception marking the 236th anniversary of France’s National Day at the French ambassador’s residence in Phnom Penh.

Representing the Cambodian government as guest of honour, Prak Sokhonn said 2026 would be a significant year for bilateral relations, with Cambodia set to welcome Macron for a state visit in November – the first by a French head of state in six decades.

He also highlighted Cambodia’s role as host of the 20th Francophonie Summit, describing it as a historic occasion for the community of 90 member states and governments united by the French language and shared values of solidarity, dialogue and cultural diversity.

Officials said the summit will provide an opportunity to promote cooperation and closer exchanges between peoples, reinforcing Cambodia’s place within the Francophonie and its partnership with France.

The event was attended by Cambodian and French officials as well as representatives of the diplomatic community.

Prak Sokhonn said the visit and summit would further strengthen ties, building on recent high‑level meetings between Macron and Prime Minister Hun Manet.
