PHNOM PENH, April 9, 2026 (KPT) – French President Emmanuel Macron has said Cambodia and France share a “deep common history” that continues to strengthen, following talks with Prime Minister Hun Manet in Paris.

Macron made the remarks after meeting the Cambodian leader on April 8, where the two sides discussed bilateral relations and international issues.

“Thank you to Prime Minister Hun Manet of the Kingdom of Cambodia for participating in the One Health Summit yesterday in Lyon, and for the exchange of views we had today here in Paris,” Macron said.

He added that ties between the two countries were growing stronger, particularly in areas such as energy, healthcare and cultural heritage.

Macron also highlighted cooperation through the Francophonie, noting that the next summit will be held in Phnom Penh later this year. He confirmed plans to visit Cambodia in November for the event, describing it as an opportunity to further deepen relations.

Cambodian government spokesman Pen Bona said the talks focused on expanding cooperation across politics, security, trade, investment and culture, with the aim of eventually elevating ties to a strategic partnership.

The discussions also covered preparations for the upcoming Francophonie Summit, which Cambodia will host.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet is visiting France to attend the 9th One Health Summit, held from April 6 to 9 in Lyon and Paris.

He is accompanied by his spouse, Pich Chanmony, as well as senior officials including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn.

The visit underscored Cambodia’s efforts to strengthen ties with France and reaffirmed the importance of shared values and cooperation in addressing global challenges.
