Cambodia’s Banana Exports Surge 25% on Strong Asian Demand
PHNOM PENH, Feb 26, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s fresh banana exports rose sharply at the start of the year, generating more than $14.5 million in January, a 25.5 percent increase year on year, official data showed Thursday.
The General Department of Customs and Excise said the surge reflected robust demand from key Asian markets, particularly China and Japan. Industry operators reported steady daily shipments, with some exporters harvesting 6,000–7,000 bunches per day, equivalent to 3–10 containers bound for overseas buyers.

Agriculture officials attributed the growth to rising international demand and expanded production capacity. Cambodia now has more than 16,000 hectares of banana plantations, with 11,000 hectares under harvest, concentrated in provinces including Ratanakiri, Kratie, Stung Treng, Kampot, Kampong Cham and Kampong Speu.
The strong January performance builds on gains in 2025, when Cambodia earned over $178 million from banana exports, up 16.8 percent from 2024. Officials said the fruit is consolidating its role as one of the country’s leading agricultural export commodities.
