Cambodia and South Korea Pledge to Deepen Strategic Partnership

Phnom Penh, 3 February 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed the strength of bilateral ties with South Korea during talks with newly appointed South Korean Ambassador Kim Changyong.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said Sokhonn received Kim on 2 February at the ministry in Phnom Penh, congratulating him on his appointment and welcoming him to Cambodia.
Sokhonn expressed satisfaction with the close relations and steady progress in cooperation between the two countries, highlighting collaboration in trade and investment, defence and security, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
He underlined the importance of the Cambodia–South Korea Strategic Partnership, which was elevated during Prime Minister Hun Manet’s official visit to Seoul in May 2024.
Sokhonn pledged that the ministry would continue to work closely with Ambassador Kim and the South Korean embassy to further strengthen ties, while expressing appreciation for South Korea’s ongoing official development assistance, which he said has contributed significantly to Cambodia’s socio-economic development.
Ambassador Kim praised the strong cooperation between the two countries and commended Cambodia’s efforts to combat transnational crime, including online scams.
He said he was committed to working closely with Cambodian institutions to deepen the strategic partnership during his tenure.
Both sides noted that 2027 will mark the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and South Korea, agreeing to organise commemorative activities and expressing their intention to elevate bilateral ties further.
During the meeting, Sokhonn also briefed the ambassador on the current situation regarding the Cambodia–Thailand border issue, the ministry said.
