Cambodia, Laos vow to expand military cooperation

PHNOM PENH, Jan 12, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Laos pledged Monday to deepen military cooperation, focusing on training, joint exercises and disaster response, as senior commanders reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between the two armed forces.
General Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, said ties would be strengthened through human resource development, exchanges of visits, information-sharing and closer coordination among service branches.
He made the remarks while receiving Colonel Vilaysone Sisombat, Head of the Lao Military Attaché Office, who paid a farewell courtesy call at the end of his three-year posting in Cambodia.
The newly appointed Lao Military Attaché, Colonel Latsakhoun Vongphosy, also attended the meeting at RCAF headquarters.
Gen. Vong Pisen praised regular high-level exchanges, scholarship programmes and cooperation in combating cross-border crime, while commending Colonel Vilaysone’s diplomatic role and welcoming his successor.
The Cambodian commander also briefed the Lao delegation on developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border, reiterating Phnom Penh’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully through established mechanisms.
Colonel Vilaysone thanked the RCAF for its support, noting that joint security and border committees had helped maintain order, strengthen bilateral ties and facilitate trade between border communities.
