Anwar Says ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Postponed Amid Thai-Cambodia Conflict

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Dec. 15, 2025) — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Monday the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed as the Thailand–Cambodia border conflict deepens and fears grow of further escalation.

The meeting was intended to bring member states together to seek a solution to the clashes, which have killed dozens on both sides. But Anwar said both Thailand and Cambodia requested the session be temporarily called off.

“We are still coordinating. There is some slight postponement to the foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled on Tuesday as we are still trying to get everything in order,” Anwar said after delivering a keynote address at a book launch.

He added that both governments remain in daily contact. “We are appealing to them to stop the fighting, which is very difficult,” he said.

Anwar helped broker a ceasefire between Bangkok and Phnom Penh in October, overseen by U.S. President Donald Trump at the ASEAN Summit, but the fragile truce collapsed within days as both sides accused each other of violations.

Reports Sunday suggested Bangkok could impose a naval blockade in the Gulf of Thailand to cut off Cambodia’s military supplies, though the Thai navy later denied the claim as misleading. Asked about the potential blockade, Anwar said negotiations were continuing.

“We’re still negotiating to get things through,” he said.
