Cambodian Government Commits to International Mechanism in Border Dispute
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — The Cambodian government reaffirmed its commitment to resolving its border dispute with Thailand through international mechanisms, emphasizing adherence to the ASEAN Charter and the terms of the “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” agreement.

During a daily press briefing titled “Update on the Implementation of the Immediate and Unconditional Ceasefire Agreement Between Cambodia and Thailand,” Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, said Cambodia remains firm in its peaceful approach.
“Cambodia reaffirmed its stand to resolve the issue peacefully and in good faith, in accordance with international law, the U.N. Charter, and the ASEAN Charter,” Socheata said. “Cambodia calls on Thailand to honor all terms stipulated in the ceasefire agreement, as well as the spirit of the agreement reached during the Extraordinary GBC Meeting.”
Socheata said Cambodia reiterated its unequivocal commitment to the consensus reached during the recent Extraordinary Meeting of the Regional Border Committee. Both sides agreed to build confidence, de-escalate tensions, and maintain peace along the border by using all available mechanisms to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid clashes.
“In the event of any issues, both parties must work together through existing mechanisms,” Socheata said. “Cambodia urges Thailand to uphold the same spirit of good neighborliness, friendship, and solidarity.”
Socheata also called on Thailand to return 18 Cambodian military personnel allegedly detained by Thai forces immediately after the ceasefire took effect on the morning of July 29. As of 4 p.m. on Sept. 1, the soldiers had been held for 34 days, six hours, and 10 minutes.
The Ministry of National Defense, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, and the international community continue to demand Thailand fulfill its obligations under international law.
“Cambodia underscores that we will never abandon or leave any of our family members behind,” Socheata said. “Full implementation of the ceasefire by both sides will foster a favorable atmosphere for restoring peace, stability, and normalcy in the friendship between our two countries.”
