PHNOM PENH, March 26, 2026 (KPT) — Japan has voiced strong support for Cambodia’s handling of its border tensions with Thailand, praising its commitment to international law and peaceful dialogue.

Speaking at a public event, Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi said Tokyo “highly appreciates” Cambodia’s firm stance and efforts to de-escalate the situation.

His remarks came during the inauguration of a clean water treatment plant in Svay Rieng, presided over by Prime Minister Hun Manet, which also marked the launch of an expanded water infrastructure project across five provinces.

Ueno said Japan recognised Cambodia’s preference for peaceful mechanisms in addressing the dispute and noted Tokyo’s continued support for communities affected by violence along the frontier.

He offered condolences to families who lost relatives during clashes, describing the situation as a major challenge for the country.

Border tensions have flared since mid-2025, leading to displacement and casualties. Japan has pledged nearly $20 million in emergency assistance, including support for mine clearance and the removal of unexploded ordnance.

Earlier aid included $1.8 million in relief delivered in August 2025 with the International Organization for Migration and UNICEF, aimed at helping displaced families.

Since January 2026, additional programmes have focused on assisting returning workers and vulnerable groups, bringing Japan’s total support to about $17 million.

Japan remains one of Cambodia’s key development partners, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, humanitarian aid and post-conflict recovery.
