Samdech Techo Hun Sen hails Japan’s role in Cambodia’s peace and mine clearance

PHNOM PENH, July 14, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Tuesday praised Japan’s long-standing support for Cambodia, highlighting its contributions to peace-building, mine clearance and infrastructure development.

Samdech Techo made the remarks during a farewell meeting with Japan’s outgoing ambassador, UENO Atsushi, at the Senate’s Peace Palace.

He thanked Japan for its assistance in overcoming challenges after decades of conflict, noting support for demining operations and reconstruction.

“Japan has played an important role in Cambodia’s development, including through major infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges and ports,” Senate spokesperson Chea Thyrith quoted Samdech TechoHun Sen as saying.

Samdech Techo said bilateral ties had advanced to a strategic partnership, with cooperation expanding in security, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.

He expressed appreciation for Ambassador UENO’s efforts to strengthen relations and hoped he would continue to remember his work in Cambodia.

UENO, who first visited Cambodia in 1991, said his connection to the country extended beyond his ambassadorial role.

He recalled witnessing Cambodia’s transformation over more than three decades and praised its development progress.

Japan remains one of Cambodia’s key development partners, providing assistance in peace-building, demining, infrastructure, education, healthcare and human resource development.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen concluded the meeting by wishing UENO success and prosperity after completing his posting.
