Cambodia-Russia Ties Built on Friendship and Long-Term Partnership

PHNOM PENH, April 7, 2026 (KPT) – Russian Ambassador Anatoly Borovik said Cambodia-Russia relations are “built on friendship, solidarity and a long-term partnership” as two Russian warships arrived for a three-day visit, marking a symbolic moment in the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Borovik described the anniversary as a “significant milestone” in bilateral cooperation, noting that relations have steadily expanded across defence, security, trade, education and cultural exchanges.
He emphasized the role of naval cooperation in strengthening military-to-military ties, adding that Russian ships are regularly welcomed at Cambodian ports, reflecting the depth of diplomatic and defence relations.
The vessels Sovershenny and Rezky from Russia’s Pacific Fleet docked at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port on April 6, carrying 262 crew members under the command of Captains Artem Shmagin and Evgenii Kovalev. They are scheduled to remain until April 8.
Rear Admiral In Sokhemara, deputy commander of Ream Naval Base, welcomed the ships alongside Cambodian naval personnel, with Borovik also attending the ceremony.
The visit is intended to enhance cooperation between the two navies, with joint activities including cultural exchanges and a friendly football match.
The programme underscores the broader partnership between Phnom Penh and Moscow, which both sides say is rooted in historical ties and a shared vision of long-term stability and cooperation.
