PHNOM PENH, April 27, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment says water quality along the Mekong River remained at a “good” level during the first quarter of 2026, following regular monitoring across six provinces.

Officials reported that monthly assessments were conducted at 11 stations in Stung Treng, Kratie, Kampong Cham, Kandal, Phnom Penh and Prey Veng.

The monitoring focused on 12 parameters, including pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, biochemical and chemical oxygen demand, nitrogen, phosphorus, nitrate and heavy metals such as cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury.

Results from January to March showed consistently good water quality, meeting national surface water standards. Authorities said the findings highlight the importance of continuous surveillance to detect risks early and ensure public health and environmental protection.

The ministry added that detailed data and technical analyses have been compiled to guide future planning.

Officials reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining water quality through enforcement measures and cooperation with provincial departments and institutions.

The Mekong River remains a vital lifeline for Cambodia’s communities, agriculture and economy.
