PHNOM PENH, April 30, 2026 (KPT) — Japan has pledged to support efforts to uphold a ceasefire and reduce tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border, following a visit by its officials to affected areas, the embassy said Wednesday.

In a statement issued April 29, the embassy said Tokyo would continue working with relevant countries to promote full implementation of the agreement and provide assistance in various forms.

The remarks followed a site visit by Colonel Hara Takashi, adviser and military attaché, and Onishi Ai, head of the political affairs section, who inspected border areas in Pursat and Oddar Meanchey provinces.

The embassy noted observations of Thai military actions described as encroaching on Cambodian territory.

Cambodia’s defence ministry has accused Thai forces of opening fire during a recent visit by foreign military attachés to the O’Smach checkpoint, saying the incident undermined the ceasefire. Japanese officials were among those present.

Ambassador Ueno Atsushi earlier praised Cambodia’s efforts to de escalate tensions, voicing support for its reliance on international law and dialogue. Border clashes since mid 2025 have displaced civilians and caused casualties.

Japan has pledged nearly $20 million in emergency assistance, including mine clearance and support for displaced families, with additional programmes since January 2026 targeting returning workers and vulnerable groups.

Tokyo remains one of Cambodia’s key development partners, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, humanitarian aid and post conflict recovery.
