Cambodia Rice Exports Diversify Beyond EU and China, ASEAN Emerges as Key Market
PHNOM PENH, May 11, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s rice exports are becoming increasingly diversified, with ASEAN countries now emerging as the largest destination, officials said Monday.

Song Saran, board member of the Cambodia Rice Federation, said the European Union accounted for around 27 percent of exports, while China rebounded strongly to take 28 percent after several years of decline. ASEAN countries, led by the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, absorbed nearly 38 percent of shipments, underscoring a shift in market dynamics.
“This shows that Cambodian rice exports are no longer mainly dependent on the EU and China as before 2024,” Saran said, noting the market structure is evolving into three strong pillars: the EU, China and ASEAN.

Officials said fragrant rice varieties such as Phka Rumduol continued to dominate, representing 64 percent of exports, while long‑grain white, parboiled and organic rice also contributed to diversification. Shipments reached 75 international markets through 68 exporting companies.
Saran added that the sector’s resilience is being strengthened by regional integration and broader diversification. Looking toward 2030, he said Cambodian rice exports are likely to expand into North America — particularly the United States and Canada — as well as African markets.
Such diversification, he said, will create broader opportunities for farmers and exporters while reducing reliance on traditional buyers. “The future of Cambodian rice lies in becoming more dynamic, diversified and regionally integrated,” he added.
