TOKYO, May 15, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s new ambassador to Japan, Chum Sounry, has formally presented his credentials to Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

The ceremony on May 14, held at the “Matsu-no-Ma” State Hall, marked the official start of Sounry’s tenure as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

Accredited by King Norodom Sihamoni, he arrived at the palace in a horse-drawn carriage accompanied by embassy diplomats, in line with Japanese imperial protocol.

Sounry conveyed greetings from King Sihamoni and the Cambodian people, pledging to deepen bilateral cooperation.

He welcomed the recent elevation of ties to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” describing it as a sign of mutual trust and shared goals in promoting peace, stability and sustainable development.

Emperor Naruhito, according to the embassy, expressed best wishes for the ambassador’s mission and for continued friendly relations between Japan and Cambodia.

Japan remains one of Cambodia’s largest development partners, with decades of close diplomatic and economic cooperation.
