Cambodian Envoy Reaffirms Economic Cooperation with Japan Development Institute

PHNOM PENH, April 18, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s ambassador‑designate to Japan, Chum Sounry, has pledged to deepen economic cooperation with the Japan Development Institute (JDI), highlighting the role of Japanese expertise in driving Cambodia’s industrial growth.
During talks in Tokyo on April 17 with JDI Chairman Shoichi Kobayashi, both sides reviewed ongoing collaboration and explored new opportunities to support Cambodia’s development, particularly in industrial expansion and investment attraction.
Sounry praised JDI’s continued engagement, citing its involvement in Special Economic Zones (SEZs), agro‑based initiatives in Battambang province and energy projects.
He said such efforts were vital to Cambodia’s broader development goals and welcomed further Japanese investment in priority sectors.
Both parties underscored the importance of SEZs in attracting foreign direct investment, diversifying industry and creating jobs.
They also discussed the potential establishment of a dedicated Japan–Cambodia SEZ to strengthen bilateral industrial ties.
The ambassador reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to long‑term cooperation with JDI, with both sides expressing confidence in expanding collaboration and achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.
