Germany Voices Support for International Law in Cambodia Border Talks

PHNOM PENH, June 4, 2026 (KPT) — Germany has expressed support for Cambodia’s approach to resolving its border dispute with Thailand through peaceful means and international law during talks with Cambodian lawmakers in Phnom Penh.

The position was conveyed at a working discussion on June 3 at the National Assembly Palace between Cambodian and German parliamentary representatives.

Cambodia’s National Assembly Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Information reiterated that the country does not recognise any border changes resulting from military force and remains committed to peaceful settlement in line with international law.

The German delegation, led by Thomas Rachel of the Bundestag’s Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development, backed rules‑based mechanisms for resolving disputes and underlined the UN’s role in maintaining global peace and stability.

The delegation also voiced regret over the impact of the border issue on affected Cambodian communities.

Talks were held with Nim Chandara, vice chairman of the National Assembly committee, representing Suos Yara.

Beyond the border dispute, both sides discussed ways to deepen bilateral ties, with Cambodia proposing a memorandum of understanding between the two parliaments to strengthen institutional cooperation and promote regular exchanges.

Cambodian lawmakers said the proposed agreement would enhance legislative capacity‑building, facilitate experience sharing and support human resource development, including expanded scholarships for Cambodian students.

They also encouraged greater German investment and tourism promotion.

Both sides welcomed continued parliamentary engagement and pledged to strengthen ties through reciprocal visits.

Cambodia and Germany established diplomatic relations in 1967, with Berlin remaining one of Phnom Penh’s key European trading partners and a major provider of development assistance.
