Rubio Says US Helped De-escalate Cambodia–Thailand Border Crisis, Citing “Tremendous Successes” Amid Global Challenges

Washington, D.C., June 5, 2026 (KPT) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that the Trump administration played a role in mediating the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute, framing it as part of broader efforts to defuse international conflicts.
Testifying before a congressional committee, Rubio said Washington had helped restore ceasefires between the two Southeast Asian neighbors during periods of heightened tension.
He described the mediation as one example of a wider pattern of US diplomatic interventions, citing engagement in multiple crises over the past 18 months.
Border issues between Cambodia and Thailand have long been sensitive, occasionally sparking military stand-offs and diplomatic friction.
Rubio also pointed to other US-led or US-supported initiatives, including ceasefire arrangements in conflict zones, expanded security partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, and new multilateral frameworks on critical minerals, technology supply chains, and artificial intelligence.
He said the administration had prioritized “direct diplomacy” to reduce conflict and strengthen regional stability, but acknowledged that several global crises remain unresolved, including the war in Sudan and ongoing tensions in Africa and the Middle East.
