Cambodia and US Discuss Bilateral Ties and Regional Cooperation

PHNOM PENH, June 6, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn met with Hunt VanderToll, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Southeast Asia and ASEAN Affairs, on June 5 to discuss bilateral relations, regional cooperation, and peace efforts linked to the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict.

During a working lunch in Phnom Penh, Prak Sokhonn expressed Cambodia’s appreciation for Washington’s proactive role under President Donald J. Trump in supporting and facilitating the ceasefire agreement reached on July 28 and the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement signed on October 26, 2025.

He noted that U.S. engagement had been instrumental in advancing dialogue and ensuring the implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, which helped ease tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
The two officials also reviewed positive developments in Cambodia–U.S. relations, highlighting progress in political, economic, and security cooperation. They discussed ways to further strengthen collaboration under the ASEAN–U.S.

The Cambodian also welcomed the approval of more than $100 million by the United States to support the development of Techo International Airport, underscoring the importance of infrastructure investment in strengthening economic ties and regional connectivity.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors and pledged to deepen the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and the United States, underscoring the importance of sustained engagement for peace and mutual development.
