HANOI, June 10, 2026 (KPT) — A senior United Nations official has hailed Cambodia’s achievements in clearing landmines and its growing role in international peacekeeping, describing the country as a key contributor to global security during talks with Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet in Vietnam.

Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under‑Secretary‑General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, commended Cambodia’s expertise in mine clearance and unexploded ordnance disposal, calling it a complex and resource‑intensive task requiring sustained commitment.

She also highlighted the contribution of Cambodian peacekeepers to UN missions worldwide, saying their participation demonstrated both responsibility and valuable experience sharing.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi, Nakamitsu recalled her work in Cambodia before 1991, including efforts to support the return of refugees after years of conflict.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet thanked the UN for its role in Cambodia’s peace process and outlined progress in mine clearance, noting the country’s hosting of the Siem Reap‑Angkor Summit on a Mine‑Free World in 2024 as a milestone in international cooperation.

He stressed Cambodia’s history underscored the devastating consequences of war and the importance of dialogue to resolve disputes.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional issues, agreeing that disputes must be settled peacefully and in line with international law.

Samdech Thipadei reaffirmed Cambodia’s position that border matters with Thailand should be resolved through negotiation and existing agreements.
