Cambodia–Thailand Trade Plunges Nearly 39% as Border Tensions Slash Thai Imports

PHNOM PENH, June 10, 2026 (KPT) — Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand plunged nearly 39 percent in the first five months of 2026, official data showed Wednesday, as border tensions triggered a steep decline in Thai imports and disrupted cross‑border commerce.

The General Department of Customs and Excise said total trade fell to just over US$1.1 billion from January to May, down 38.7 percent year‑on‑year. Cambodian exports to Thailand dropped 25 percent to US$296 million, while imports from Thailand fell more sharply, sliding 42.4 percent to US$854 million.

Commerce Ministry spokesperson Penn Sovicheat attributed the downturn to border restrictions, noting that some categories of Thai imports had fallen by more than 70 percent. He said fuel, gas, vegetables and fruits were suspended, though certain automotive parts and agricultural machinery continued to enter Cambodia via maritime and air routes.

The decline extends a broader trend. In 2025, bilateral trade totaled US$3.65 billion, down 14.9 percent from the previous year. Despite the slowdown with Thailand, officials said Cambodia’s overall external trade remains resilient, supported by strong exports, rising foreign investment and diversified partnerships.
