Cambodia highlights momentum in U.S. ties at America’s 250th Independence celebration
PHNOM PENH, July 2, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with the United States, citing growing cooperation in trade, investment, aviation, security and development as Washington marked the 250th anniversary of its independence, officials said Wednesday.
Speaking at a reception hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth said the bilateral relationship has entered a new phase marked by “positive momentum” across multiple sectors.

“Our two countries share more than 75 years of diplomatic relations that, through many chapters of history, have grown from strength to strength, more resilient, and more promising,” he said. “Cambodia remains fully committed to building on this foundation toward a strong partnership, guided by the principles of mutual benefit, respect and trust.”
Vongsey noted recent developments including the Reciprocal Trade Agreement, the first Open Skies Air Transport Agreement, and cooperation on the Techo International Airport project. He also highlighted defence ties, citing the USS Cincinnati’s visit to Ream Naval Base, the resumption of the Angkor Sentinel exercise, and joint efforts against online scams.
He praised longstanding U.S. development assistance in health, education, agriculture, mine clearance and environmental protection, pointing to a new five‑year health memorandum as a practical example.
Vongsey said people‑to‑people ties are at unprecedented levels, with American tourists among Cambodia’s leading visitors and Cambodian graduates of U.S. universities increasingly taking leadership roles. He also thanked Washington for returning cultural artifacts and supporting heritage protection.
On regional peace, he expressed appreciation for U.S. engagement in promoting reconciliation with Thailand, crediting President Donald J. Trump’s role in facilitating the 2025 ceasefire and Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord.
The reception at Koh Pich City Hall brought together senior officials, diplomats and business leaders from both countries to commemorate the milestone and reaffirm their commitment to deepening ties.
