ASEAN Foreign Ministers Renew Backing for Five‑Point Consensus on Myanmar

MANILA, July 23, 2026 (KPT) – ASEAN foreign ministers have reaffirmed their commitment to the bloc’s Five‑Point Consensus on Myanmar while reviewing regional priorities, community‑building efforts and external partnerships during their annual meeting in Manila.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn joined counterparts at the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the Extended Informal Consultation on the Myanmar peace plan on July 21.

The meeting, chaired by Philippine Foreign Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro, reviewed ASEAN’s 2026 priorities under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.”

Ministers pledged to advance the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 across political‑security, economic and socio‑cultural pillars, and adopted the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights’ priority programmes for 2027.

Sokhonn stressed the need for deeper integration and peaceful dispute resolution, citing respect for sovereignty and international law as essential to regional stability.

On energy, he called for faster implementation of the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement, development of the ASEAN Power Grid, greater investment in renewables and closer cooperation to ensure affordable and sustainable energy.

He also welcomed revised guidelines on external engagement, noting Türkiye’s admission as ASEAN’s newest Dialogue Partner.

During the separate consultation on Myanmar, ministers received a briefing from the ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy and reaffirmed the consensus as the bloc’s primary framework for resolving the crisis.

Sokhonn praised the Philippines for its leadership and welcomed informal talks with Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe, saying they allowed frank discussions on ASEAN’s support.

He expressed hope the bloc would build on recent momentum to make further progress in implementing the Five‑Point Consensus.
