Industry, Government Align to Safeguard Workers as Heat Risks Rise
PHNOM PENH, Feb 26, 2026 (KPT) – As Cambodia enters the hot season, industry leaders and government authorities are reinforcing safety measures to protect workers in the Kingdom’s garment, footwear and travel goods (GFT) sector.
At a meeting Wednesday in Phnom Penh, the Textile, Apparel, Footwear & Travel Goods Association in Cambodia (TAFTAC) and representatives from The LABS discussed strengthening building and electrical safety standards across factories, with a focus on preventing power disruptions and managing heat stress.

The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has urged factory owners to intensify occupational safety efforts during the hot season. Ministry spokesperson Sun Mesa said the reminder reflects Labour Minister Heng Sour’s concern for both worker well-being and uninterrupted operations.
Authorities have recommended practical steps including improved ventilation, safe storage of materials, and access to clean drinking water. Factories are also encouraged to promote hydration, adjust clothing guidelines, spray rooftops to reduce heat absorption, and assign staff to monitor workplace temperatures.
TAFTAC Secretary General Ken Loo stressed that Cambodia’s GFT factories continue to comply with safety regulations set by relevant ministries. He said TAFTAC regularly conducts inductions, workshops and targeted training sessions, particularly to support smaller factories in meeting updated standards.
The alignment between industry and regulators underscores a broader recognition: worker protection is directly tied to economic sustainability. In 2025, Cambodia earned US$15.5 billion from GFT exports – a 15.7 percent increase from the previous year – while registered enterprises rose to 46,649, employing more than 2.14 million workers.
