Cambodia Hosts Workshop on Geographical Indications to Strengthen Market Strategies
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 8, 2025) — Cambodian officials and international partners gathered Monday for a workshop on best practices in protecting and promoting geographical indications, aiming to strengthen market strategies and safeguard cultural heritage.

The consultation, held under the theme “From Production to Market: Best Practices in GI Protection and Market Strategies,” was chaired by Commerce Ministry Secretary of State Ouk Prachea, who also serves as vice chair of the National Committee for Intellectual Property Management.
Participants included government representatives, EU delegates, ASEAN trainees, and associations of Cambodian GI products. The workshop sought to share knowledge and experiences on GI policy implementation, rural development, sustainable production, and legal enforcement.

Ouk Prachea emphasized the global value of GI products, saying they not only reinforce local identity but also drive Cambodia’s economic growth. He noted that GIs symbolize quality and tradition, linking products to their origin, climate and production methods.
He also stressed the need for producers, associations and companies to meet high technical standards, undergo internal and external inspections, and ensure environmentally sustainable practices.

The secretary of state urged ASEAN to strengthen regional cooperation, enhance producer capacity, and expand collaboration with partners such as the EU Intellectual Property Office to integrate Cambodian GI products into European markets.
