PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct. 3, 2025) — Chinese automaker BYD plans to officially launch its electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Cambodia in the coming weeks, with an annual production target of 10,000 units and ambitions to deepen industrial cooperation in the region.

During a meeting on Thursday with Cambodia’s Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), BYD executives led by Xiao Haipin, Executive Director of the BYD Group President’s Office, outlined the company’s progress and plans. The delegation reported that construction of the EV assembly facility in the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone is nearing completion, with preparations underway for the plant’s inauguration and the opening of a dedicated service center.

The $32 million facility spans 12 hectares and will operate under a completely knocked down (CKD) model, importing components for local assembly. BYD also plans to collaborate with Huawei to promote investment in Cambodia’s automotive and electronics sectors, including joint initiatives in Shenzhen.

Minister Chanthol welcomed BYD’s growing presence and praised the company’s role in advancing Cambodia’s green mobility goals. He reaffirmed CDC’s commitment to facilitating private-sector investment and ensuring a flexible, investor-friendly environment.

BYD’s entry into Cambodia comes amid surging EV adoption, with registrations rising over 600% in 2024.
