Cambodia Stresses Youth Leadership as Driver of Sustainable Development at UN Forum
NEW YORK, April 17, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has underscored the role of youth leadership in advancing sustainable and inclusive growth at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum, officials said Friday.
The delegation, led by Serei Chumneas, secretary of state at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, joined discussions under the theme “Innovate, Unite and Transform: Youth Shaping the Road to 2030.”

Chumneas told the session on youth leadership that young people are central to Cambodia’s development strategy, noting that more than 60 percent of the population is under 35. “Youth are a powerful force for change, and empowering them is central to Cambodia’s long-term vision,” he said.
Cambodia highlighted progress in building youth capacity through national policies and programs focused on skills, education and leadership. Initiatives include debate platforms, volunteer schemes, STEM competitions, digital learning and financial literacy, equipping thousands with practical skills and opportunities.
The government has also expanded inclusive education, supporting indigenous communities and persons with disabilities, while promoting youth participation in decision-making at school and community levels.
Officials acknowledged persistent challenges, particularly gaps in access to quality education and digital resources between rural and urban areas. They said bridging these divides remains a priority as Cambodia seeks to ensure equal opportunities for all young people.
Reaffirming its commitment, Cambodia pledged continued investment in education systems, expanded digital skills and greater opportunities for youth engagement, stressing that empowered young leaders are key to achieving the 2030 development agenda.
