Centuries-Lost Naga Balustrades Reinstated as Cambodia Revives Beng Mealea’s Eastern Causeway
PHNOM PENH, Feb. 18, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has restored the Eastern Causeway of Beng Mealea temple, reinstating its centuries-lost Naga balustrades in a project hailed as a major step in safeguarding the country’s cultural heritage, officials said Wednesday.
The months-long restoration returned the balustrades, beams, and pillars to their original positions, while the historic drainage system was repaired to allow water to flow naturally through the causeway once again.

Leu Channora, an archaeologist with the APSARA National Authority, said the causeway had deteriorated to the point of nearly losing its original form. With the completion of the first phase—covering 100 meters in length and 13 meters in width—the structure is now stable and visually striking.
The project is a joint effort between the APSARA National Authority and the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund of the People’s Republic of China, underscoring regional cooperation in preserving Cambodia’s ancient monuments.
