APSARA Launches Urgent Restoration to Safeguard Pre Rup Temple
PHNOM PENH, Jan 23, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s APSARA National Authority has begun urgent restoration at Pre Rup Temple after identifying structural risks to one of its brick towers and parts of the laterite floor in the southwest section of the monument.

Archaeologist So Pot from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology said the temple’s age has caused significant deterioration, with sections of the brick walls decaying and losing their original structure. Immediate intervention was deemed necessary to prevent further damage.
Erosion of the laterite floor has also created channels for rainwater to seep toward the foundation, posing risks to the temple’s stability.
APSARA said the restoration is being carried out by Cambodian experts in line with technical standards set by the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Sites of Angkor and Sambor Prei Kuk.
