PHNOM PENH, Jan 21, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Laos have reaffirmed their close bilateral relations as the outgoing Lao ambassador concluded his mission in Phnom Penh, in talks that also looked ahead to the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties and an upcoming royal visit.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn on Tuesday received Buakeo Phumvongsay, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Laos, for a farewell courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sokhonn praised Buakeo’s four year tenure, noting that the two countries had maintained frequent high level exchanges and expanded cooperation in multiple areas. He thanked the envoy for his role in strengthening Cambodia–Laos relations.

Buakeo expressed gratitude for the support he received from the Cambodian government and institutions, and briefed Sokhonn on the successful 12th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party earlier this month, which endorsed the party’s political program and five year socio economic plan.

Both sides underlined that 2026 marks 70 years of diplomatic relations. To mark the milestone, preparations are under way for a State Visit by King Norodom Sihamoni to Laos — an event expected to further reinforce bilateral friendship.

Sokhonn wished Buakeo success in future assignments and pledged to work closely with the incoming Lao ambassador to continue strengthening ties.
