Cambodia’s Senate President Extends Independence Day Greetings to Myanmar, Reaffirms Bilateral Ties

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Jan. 2, 2026) — Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen has congratulated Myanmar on the 78th anniversary of its Independence Day, underscoring the two countries’ longstanding ties and commitment to regional cooperation.
In a message to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council, Hun Sen conveyed best wishes to the government and people of Myanmar.
He praised their resilience and commitment to national prosperity, while highlighting the strong relationship between Cambodia and Myanmar, rooted in shared cultural and religious traditions, particularly Theravada Buddhism.
Hun Sen reaffirmed his pledge to work closely with Myanmar to strengthen cooperation bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks, emphasizing the importance of advancing mutual interests.
Cambodia and Myanmar, both founding members of ASEAN, have maintained diplomatic relations for decades and regularly engage in political, economic and cultural forums.
Despite differences in governance, Cambodia has consistently emphasized dialogue, mutual respect and support for Myanmar’s sovereignty.
Officials said high level visits and messages such as Independence Day greetings reflect Cambodia’s broader foreign policy approach of promoting stability, constructive engagement and goodwill across Southeast Asia.
