Former UN Peacekeepers Express Solidarity With Cambodia, Urge Peaceful Resolution
PHNOM PENH (Dec. 15, 2025) — Former United Nations peacekeepers from Bulgaria have voiced solidarity with Cambodia amid escalating border tensions with Thailand, urging both sides to resolve disputes through dialogue and international law rather than military force.
In a letter to Cambodia’s ambassador to Bulgaria, the Association of Bulgarian Veteran Peacekeepers recalled their service under the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia in the early 1990s, emphasizing deep emotional and historical ties to the country. The veterans said they were following recent developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border with “grave concern,” warning that renewed violence threatens civilian safety and Cambodia’s irreplaceable cultural heritage.

“These sacred temples are part of the ancient Khmer heritage — treasures of human civilization that must be protected, preserved and revered,” the letter said, stressing that such sites should unite, not divide, nations.
Drawing on their experience of conflict and recovery in Cambodia, the peacekeepers underscored that lasting peace cannot be achieved through force. They urged both governments to refrain from escalation and to bring disputes before international mechanisms, particularly the United Nations.
The association reaffirmed respect for Cambodia’s sovereignty and cultural dignity, noting the resilience of its people and the sacrifices made during UN missions.
“The peace may be difficult, but war is always destructive,” the veterans warned.
The letter concluded by reaffirming the friendship between Bulgaria and Cambodia and pledging continued moral support for Cambodia’s pursuit of peace, stability and respect for international law.
