Cambodia Reaffirms Commitment to Graduate from LDC Status by 2029 at UN General Assembly

NEW YORK, June 25, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has reaffirmed its determination to graduate from the United Nations’ Least Developed Country (LDC) category by 2029, underscoring national efforts to ensure a smooth and sustainable transition.

Speaking at a joint UN General Assembly and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) thematic event reviewing progress on the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs, Cambodia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Keo Chhea, said the country remained firmly committed to the programme’s objectives.

He pointed to the establishment of the National Committee for Cambodia’s LDC Graduation as a key mechanism guiding the process.

The Royal Government, he added, is working to safeguard economic progress and preserve development gains throughout the transition period, ensuring that growth remains inclusive and resilient.

Ambassador Keo also called for renewed international solidarity and stronger partnerships to support developing countries.

He stressed the importance of cooperation in areas such as development financing, technology transfer, capacity building, climate resilience and transition assistance, noting that these elements are critical for countries preparing to graduate from the LDC category.

Cambodia’s scheduled graduation in 2029 will mark a significant milestone in its economic and social development, reflecting decades of progress in poverty reduction, infrastructure expansion and human capital investment.

The move will place Cambodia among nations that have successfully advanced beyond the LDC designation, a step seen as both a recognition of achievements and a challenge to sustain momentum in the years ahead.
