UNICEF Warns of Child Risk as Border Fighting Displaces Thousands in Cambodia
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 8, 2025) — UNICEF has warned of rising dangers for children after armed clashes along the Cambodia–Thailand border forced thousands of families to flee and left mounting civilian casualties.
UNICEF Representative Dr. Will Parks said the agency is monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with authorities to support affected communities. “Children must be protected at all times, and their safety and well being must be prioritized,” he said.
Fighting intensified for a second day Monday, with officials in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces reporting civilian deaths, injuries and mass evacuations. At least four civilians have been killed, nine injured and tens of thousands displaced.
Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture also accused Thai forces of damaging conservation facilities at the Temple of Preah Vihear, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Restoration work has been suspended and staff evacuated.
The government urged Thailand to halt hostilities and called on the international community to condemn violations of global cultural heritage protections.
