PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct.23, 2025) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Wednesday congratulated Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, the first woman to hold the office in the country’s history.

In a message dated Oct. 22, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet called Takaichi’s election by the Japanese Diet on Oct. 21 a “historic” achievement.

“On behalf of the Royal Government and the people of Cambodia, I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your historic election as the first female prime minister of Japan,” Samdech Thipadei said.

He praised the long-standing friendship between Cambodia and Japan, citing frequent high-level exchanges and cooperation across various sectors.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also referenced his official visit to Japan in May, during which both nations reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2023.

“I look forward to working closely with you to strengthen the enduring partnership between our two countries as we advance our shared vision for peace, stability and prosperity in our region and beyond,” he said.

He added that he hopes to meet Takaichi “at the earliest convenience” to continue discussions on bilateral cooperation.

Takaichi, a veteran politician and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, was elected by Japan’s parliament on Oct. 21.
