Senate President Calls for Calm, Legal Resolution in Cambodia-Thailand Border Row
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct. 17, 2025) — Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Thursday condemned what he described as Thailand’s “brutal violation” of Cambodia’s territorial integrity and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to resolving the border dispute peacefully and in accordance with international law.

Speaking at the opening of the fourth session of the fifth Legislature of the Senate, Hun Sen urged friendly nations to help prevent further escalation and ensure respect for a mutually agreed ceasefire.
“Cambodia remains patient and firmly committed to peace,” Hun Sen said.
Yang Peou, secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, echoed Hun Sen’s stance, emphasizing the importance of resolving the issue through peaceful means and adherence to international law. He called on Thailand to honor existing treaties and agreements.
“Cambodia’s strength lies in its steadfast adherence to international law,” Yang said. “This principled stance gives us a comparative advantage and helps garner support from the international community.”
Yang also urged intensified diplomatic efforts, particularly in coordination with the ASEAN Intergovernmental Observer Team, whose members recently arrived at a border location where Thai forces had reportedly broadcast disruptive sounds overnight.
“The presence of ASEAN observers is a diplomatic success and a clear sign of regional support,” he said.
Despite Cambodia’s commitment to diplomacy, Yang stressed the need to maintain military readiness in the event of future aggression.
“Cambodia must be prepared to defend its sovereignty and protect its citizens,” he said, noting the importance of a well-equipped and responsive armed force.
Government spokesman Pen Bona on Friday reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to a peaceful resolution but said the country reserves the right to defend its territorial integrity under international law.
“While exercising maximum restraint to uphold the ceasefire and avoid renewed armed clashes, Cambodia does not recognize any unilateral declaration by the Thai military,” Bona said.
He also rejected recent claims by Thai military officials that disputed border areas in Banteay Meanchey province belong to Thailand.
“Cambodia reaffirms its position to settle the dispute through peaceful and legal means,” he said.
