U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh Limits Social Media Amid Federal Government Shutdown

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct.01, 2025) — The U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh has announced a temporary reduction in its social media activity following a lapse in federal appropriations that triggered a U.S. government shutdown early Wednesday.

In a statement, the embassy said its official Facebook page will not be updated regularly until full government operations resume, except for urgent safety and security information. Scheduled passport and visa services will continue as long as conditions allow.

The shutdown began at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Oct. 1, after U.S. lawmakers failed to reach a budget agreement. The deadlock stems from stalled negotiations between congressional Democrats, Republicans, and President Donald Trump over funding legislation, according to a BBC report.

Non-essential services, including small business loans, national parks, and veteran job training programs, have been suspended. Essential operations such as military and law enforcement will continue, though many employees will work without pay.

This is the first U.S. government shutdown since January 2019 and the fourth under Trump’s administration. Reports from Washington suggest a broader White House strategy to restructure federal agencies, including guidance for mass employee terminations and regulatory overhauls.

The embassy urged American citizens in Cambodia to monitor official channels and assured that core consular services will remain available as long as feasible.
