PHNOM PENH, March 23, 2026 (KPT) — Japan has pledged almost $20 million in emergency aid to Cambodian civilians affected by the 2025 border conflict with Thailand, including returning workers and communities impacted by armed clashes.

Speaking in Phnom Penh on March 23, Japan’s Ambassador Ueno Atsushi said the assistance also supports mine clearance and the disposal of unexploded ordnance along the frontier.

In August 2025, Japan delivered $1.8 million in emergency relief in coordination with the International Organization for Migration and UNICEF, targeting displaced families.

Since January 2026, additional support has focused on returning Cambodian workers and vulnerable populations, bringing the total value of initiatives to about $17 million.

“Japan remains committed to promoting peace and stability in the region, as well as restoring and improving the livelihoods of affected populations,” Ueno said.

Tokyo has called for strict implementation of ceasefire agreements, restraint, and peaceful dialogue, pledging to continue working with partners to reduce tensions.

Japan has long supported Cambodia’s infrastructure, human resource development and public services, contributing to economic growth and improved living standards.
