Cambodia and Laos pledge closer ties as new ambassador presents credentials

PHNOM PENH, Mar 24, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations as the newly appointed Lao ambassador formally presented his credentials in Phnom Penh.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen, acting as head of state on behalf of the King, received Sonexay Vannaxay at the Senate’s Samdech Vibol Samaki Palace on Tuesday.

Senate spokesman Chea Thyrith said Samdech Techo welcomed and congratulated the envoy, noting that his swift arrival underscored the importance Laos places on its ties with Cambodia.

The ambassador expressed gratitude for the opportunity, describing relations between the two countries as longstanding and comprehensive.

He said Cambodia and Laos share a strong tradition of mutual support and close neighbourly ties.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen highlighted that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, pledging to further strengthen cooperation during his tenure.

He encouraged deeper collaboration in trade, investment and economic development, describing these areas as key pillars underpinning broader political and diplomatic relations.

The envoy thanked Cambodia for its continued support, particularly during the COVID 19 pandemic, when Phnom Penh provided vaccines and technical assistance to Laos.

Samdech Techo welcomed the remarks, stressing that bilateral ties have remained strong and enduring, with both countries maintaining a close and sincere friendship.
