Cambodia, Laos to Strengthen Joint Border Security Efforts

STUNG TRENG, May 19, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Laos pledged Tuesday to step up cooperation along their shared frontier, as senior military officials met in Stung Treng for the fourth session of their Border Security and Order Cooperation Committee.
General Eth Sarath, Deputy Commander‑in‑Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, led the Cambodian delegation, while Major General Vanthong Bouttavong, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Lao People’s Army, headed the Lao side.
The talks focused on enhancing joint measures to maintain security and public order, building on agreements reached at last year’s meeting in Pakse, Champasak Province.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to resolve issues peacefully and avoid actions that could undermine stability.
The meeting coincided with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two neighbours, which officials described as marked by strong cooperation across multiple sectors.
Delegates highlighted the importance of strengthening coordination between armed forces and border communities to ensure long‑term stability.
General Eth Sarath said the annual committee sessions, held alternately in each country, reflect a spirit of friendship, solidarity and mutual respect.

He noted that while progress has been made, challenges remain in ensuring effective coordination along the frontier.
Both sides agreed to expand joint patrols, improve information sharing, and deepen collaboration in tackling cross‑border crime.
The committee said these efforts would help safeguard peace and security while reinforcing the long‑standing ties between the armed forces and people of Cambodia and Laos.
