PHNOM PENH, May 6, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s National Assembly president has informed Laos of the country’s decision to pursue a United Nations backed legal mechanism to resolve a maritime boundary dispute with Thailand.

Samdech Khuon Sudary met Lao ambassador Sonexay Vannaxay in Phnom Penh on Wednesday, outlining Cambodia’s intention to use “compulsory conciliation” under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The move follows Thailand’s withdrawal from a 2001 memorandum of understanding on maritime boundaries, which Cambodia described as regretful.

Khuon Sudary said Cambodia placed “the highest value on peace and the lives of its people,” stressing that the UNCLOS process was aimed at achieving a fair and lasting solution.

She added that Cambodia’s response reflected its commitment to resolving disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law.

Talks also focused on broader ties between Cambodia and Laos, which both sides described as longstanding and close.

Khuon Sudary welcomed Vannaxay on his appointment and expressed confidence that relations would continue to deepen, highlighting cooperation in tourism, culture and trade, including plans to strengthen links between heritage sites such as Wat Phou and Angkor Wat.

Both sides noted that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, with commemorative events planned.

Vannaxay voiced support for Cambodia’s position on the maritime dispute and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
